Juancho's Table of Friends

A lake hidden beneath a limestone cliff, ten of his closest people, and a tablecloth everyone was invited to ruin. How we turned Juancho Hernangómez's 31st birthday into our first chapter in Greece.

Some birthdays are parties. This one was a portrait.

When Juancho Hernangómez turned 31, he did it in Athens, the city that took him in during his years with Panathinaikos and never quite let him go. He did not want a crowd. He wanted his people: ten of them, close friends and teammates, around one table. Our job was to make that table feel like him, down to the last detail.

The settingWe chose Lake Vouliagmeni, a still, mineral-blue lake on the Athens Riviera that sits half beneath an overhanging wall of limestone. At night the rock is lit from below and the water turns into a mirror, so every candle on the table appears twice. Dinner was at AbraOvata, on one side of the lake, with nothing between the table and the water but a few steps of stone.

The table late in the evening, covered in plates, grapes and handwritten notes

A tablecloth made to be ruinedInstead of linen, we dressed the table in raw canvas and left a pen at every seat. The rule was simple: there were no rules. Guests wrote birthday wishes, tasting notes on whatever was in their glass, inside jokes and things only Juancho would understand. Wine was spilled, sauce was dropped, candle wax ran across it. None of it was wiped away. By the end of the night the cloth had become a record of the evening, signed by everyone who was there, and something Juancho could take home and keep.

His wine, his storyWine is one of Juancho's great loves, so we let it lead. Every bottle poured that night came from his own collection, opened one after another as the courses arrived. The empty bottles did not leave the table. We wrapped them in vintage-style prints of his childhood photographs, some dating back to 1995, the year he was born, and turned them into candleholders. As the evening went on, the candles melted down over those old photos and onto the canvas below, each one leaving its own small trace.

The people who could not comeAnyone who knows Juancho knows that his family and friends come first. Not all of them could be in Athens that night. So we brought them to the table anyway: the front of every menu carried a photograph of Juancho with someone he loves who was somewhere else in the world. Ten seats were filled, and many more people were present.

And then, the cakeBecause a birthday deserves a little drama, Cut Caviar flew caviar in from Portugal for the occasion. The cake arrived crowned with it, candles lit, the lake glowing behind. Not every birthday ends with candles blown out over caviar.

Every element on the table was chosen to say something about the person at its centre, and to leave something behind once the evening was over.

This is what a private Table of Friends looks like. We do not hire a venue and print a menu. We start with a person, learn what they love and who they love, and build the table outward from there: the place, the plates, the objects, the small surprises. The result is an evening that could only ever have belonged to one person.

Juancho, here's to 31, to your favourite people always being around the table, and to never running out of good wine.
